Raw Feeding Guide

Raw feeding is a species appropriate diet that is completely natural for dogs, and can be traced back to their ancestors, wolves and wild dogs. If you study a dogs anatomy, you will find that it hasnt changed, but sadly their diets have which is causing major health issues. A dogs digestive system is naturally designed to digest meat, offal and bone, all of which can be found in a natural, raw diet.

Raw feeding has many known health benefits. From young to old, small to large, we have seen first hand the improvments a raw diet can make to your dogs health and wellbeing.

Key benefits can include reduced flatulence, healthy skin/coat, smaller stools, cleaner teeth, better gut health/digestion, reduced hyperactivtiy, and enjoyable meal times with lots of variety.

To correctly calculate how much raw dog food you should be feeding each day, you will need to know your dogs age and weight.

The average adult dog (12 months +) will require 2-3% of their bodyweight per day in raw food.

Puppies need a higher percentage of their body weight in raw food per day starting

From 10-16 weeks approximately 8%

From 16-20 weeks approximately 7%

From 20-24 weeks approximately 6%

From 24-36 weeks approximately 5%

From 36-52 weeks approximately 4%

We reccomend feeding a wide variety of proteins to give your dog a balanced diet.

Switching your dog onto raw

We recommend doing a straight swap from processed pet food to raw. Feed the last meal as normal the night before and introduce raw on an empty stomach the next day. We don’t recommend mixing it with processed food as this can upset the gut. Slightly softer, or runnier stools are normal over the first 4-6 days of raw feeding as your dog needs to adjust its gut bacteria to the new diet.

We always advise to keep it simple to start with, use easily digestable, bland meats that arent to rich, such as chicken or turkey for the first 7 days, to help reduce the chances of soft/runny stools. We reccomend adding new varieties slowly, and building them up one by one. Tripe is always great to feed when switching your dog onto raw as it is nutrient dense and helps to balance the stomach as its adjusting to the new diet.

To further aid your dogs transition, you can introduce probiotics - which are fantasic for gut health! Natural kefir is the most effective and is full of healthy bacteria (this can be found on our website). We also highly recommend Tummy Tastic from Proflax (also available on our website) and this comes in powdered form.

Some dogs go through a detox stage, they may itch a little or seem hungry. When dry food enters the stomach it triples in size and the dogs are used to this bloated feeling after meals. This will settle over time.

DRINKING: Whilst fresh clean water MUST always be available, pets that are raw fed drink less, they just don’t need it. Dry food can cause dehydration which is why they need to drink more.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A GUIDE, ALL DOGS ARE DIFFERENT AND YOU SHOULD BE GUIDED BY THE DOG INFRONT OF YOU - JUST LIKE HUMANS, ALL DOGS HAVE DIFFERENT METABOLIC RATES SO FEEDING AMOUNTS MAY NEED TO BE AMENDED*
